Hello! Welcome back to school! By now, it's mid-October! This blog post has been in the back of my mind for forever, but I'm just now getting around to it. Today's post is dedicated to some of the FUN things we did during the first month of school! Even though the year is well underway, perhaps you'll find some ideas for next year! Remember that if you see something you like, you can always add it to your TPT wish list and take a look at it later.
It was great to have a few weeks at the start of the year to build community within the room and what goes better with building community and establishing classroom expectations than some FUN art and writing projects?! I've included affiliate links to the picture books I used to go with each activity for easy shopping!!! I think the easiest way to do this post is a photo-dump! Unfortunately, I didn't take as many pictures this year as I usually do, so some pictures are recycled from recent years. I've linked everything that I could. Enjoy!
I use a lot of mini-books with my first graders and this year, I created a few more! We did "School Bus Rules" as well as "Hallway Rules."
I always use these "Visual Direction Cards" from Ashlee Hughes...they come in very handy at the beginning of the year!
We read Chrysanthemum and did a wrinkled heart activity from my "Back to School Activities" pack. Everyone made their own little Chrysanthemum (patterns also included in my printables pack).
We read Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker and did this sort with little scenarios. We followed up the sort with a writing activity about how we could be a good listener. PS: The book is super cute, so if you don't have it, check it out below!
We read my all-time favorite book, Corduroy! The kids loved making a little Corduroy craft to go with it! The craft is from Rhonda Baldacchino.
We also read Elmer. It's such a cute book! After, the kids colored their own Elmer elephants. The pattern is FREE from Teacher by the Beach. I also love her little writing page that she included with the pattern!

As a follow-up activity for our bus mini-book and the bus safety practice we do each year in our district, the kids wrote about one way they can stay safe on the bus. They also created a little bus craft of their own. We read Manners on the Bus. The bus craft is from A Cupcake for the Teacher. You can find the differentiated writing pages for bus safety in my "Back to School Activities" pack.
