Election Day

Tomorrow is Election Day!  While we obviously aren't voting for a president this year, it's still great to teach children about the election process.  Below are a few activities I've done over the years.  The kids always have a blast with them! 

Picture books are a fantastic way to teach kids about elections.  Below are a few of my favorites.  You can check out all of my favorite picture books by clicking HERE (affiliate link).

Having mock elections are a MUST!  I set up a ballot box and we "vote" on all sorts of things...foods, animals, sports, etc..

Using mini-books in the classroom to teach about special days is a favorite.  With kid-friendly language, and pictures, it makes learning about holidays and special days simple for kids.

We usually watch "You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown" at the end of the day to wrap up the day's learning!  Grab it HERE (affiliate link).

Election Day

Election Day is just one week away and I am looking forward to it!  Our school is a polling site and I am NOT looking forward to teaching that day with all the people coming in and out of the building. The Monday-Tuesday of Election week, we'll be doing a few activities in class to teach the students about elections.  I wanted to show you a few ideas that I found.  First up: books.  I can never have too many picture books!  Below are the books that I read each time a major election comes up! Links included!  Order soon because some are limited stock!

Finally, we'll each receive a "I Voted" sticker.  I will also have streamers hanging in the door on Tuesday!  I found each of these at my local teacher supply store but have included links below in case you want to order some.  I thought the wrist bands were too cute and I have a ballot box coming to me this week!  Will you do anything for Election Day this year?

Election Day

With Election Day upon us, here are some ideas for you to use in your classroom.  I like to keep it short and sweet for my first graders.

Election Day Activities:

• Have various opportunities for voting throughout the day (where you will read a story, what song you will sing, what game you will play, etc...) and as you do these, vary the types of voting
• Pencil/paper ballot or Pre-made ballot
• Popsicle stick voting
• Voting with your feet (ex: Students who want to sing "Bear Hunt," stand over by the sink.  Students who want to sing "Bubble Gum," stand on the rug, etc... 
• Give students an "I Voted Today" badge!

It's Election Day!

To learn about the upcoming election, we read Voting and Elections.  It's a little long, so we just discussed text features and read bits and pieces of it.  Next, we talked about the importance of voting.  Finally, the kids got to vote for their favorite picture book (all 3 are class favorites...).  I set up my "offices" that I use for testing, available here.  They used their ballots to vote.  Finally, I tallied up the results! And the winner was...CORDUROY! *A for sure class favorite!
