I just love incorporating non-fiction into our writing! Especially when animals are involved! The kids just eat it up! We spent some time learning about polar bears last week and let me tell you, was it fun! We began with a simple KWL of what we thought we knew about polar bears. It's important to emphasize the "think you know" part aloud because until we research, we really don't "know" if the statements we come up with are true.
After the K & W of the KWL, we took some time to browse non-fiction polar bear books. We then completed a diagram together. As the days progressed, we read about polar bears, looked at more photographs/books, and watched REAL polar bears on YouTube! So awesome. Each day, we also worked through a page in our polar bear booklets. By the end of the week, my students were able to tell me 4-5 facts about polar bears and write them down! Woo hoo! We completed our booklets together, because this was our first experience with this type of activity. The next time we research, we'll be doing ocean animals and finally farm animals in late May. Can't wait!
