Writing Workshop Fun!

We have just been pluggin' away at writing during our workshop time, and I must say that I am VERY pleased with the progress I've seen so far this year.  We just completed our October writing sample, from my "Year-Long Writing Portfolio" pack and the difference from the beginning of the year is amazing!  I love having these samples as documentation of growth!

People always ask me what types of mini-lessons I conduct each day.  I teach directly from my Common Core Writing Bundle.  It has the mini-lessons laid out for basically an entire year, as well as anchor charts, paper templates, and anything you could possibly need to run a structured workshop in your classroom. Click the cover below for more details of what's included, as well as to see a scope and sequence.  Each of my writing units are available for purchase individually, also.

Currently, I am just finishing up Unit 1: Personal Narratives and are working on publishing our stories {more about that in a later post!}.

Some skills that I have been hitting in my mini-lessons are:

  • getting an idea on paper
  • stretching sounds you hear in words
  • spacing out your words
  • using the word wall independently
  • using our writing time appropriately
  • using writing tools as needed

Unit 2 is all about writing for others...focusing on conventions of writing.  We'll get into more depth of the above skills in the second unit, which we'll start next week.

What questions do you have about writing workshop?  I love teaching it!!  It's my favorite!

I have a question for you....do you keep one sample a month in a portfolio and then send home all the writing they do on the 'finished' side of their folder? how often do you send home their writings? That was really 2 questions! Thanks for the help...:)

Your blog is absolutely worth to read if anybody comes throughout it. I'm lucky I did because now I've got a whole new view of this. I didn't realize that this issue was so important and so universal. You certainly put it in perspective for me.
