Writing Goals

I'm back with another writing post!  I love writing workshop time and this year I wanted to add some new elements to my workshop.  With the new rigor of the CCSS and goal-setting/tracking being a best practice {in my opinion!}, I wanted to develop a way for my first graders to set goals in writing.  I've used little goal-setting half-sheets in the past, but I also wanted to see the goals on a larger scale and have the whole class become accountable for one another's goals.  That being said, I created a writing goals poster.  Each quarter, I'll draw names and ask students to tell me one area that'd like to focus on during writing workshop.  I will cut up the sticky notes and write their names on them.  They will place their sticky note on the goal they'd like to set for themselves.  During my conferencing, I will also fill out a paper goal sheet with my students where I can track how they are doing to meet their goal.  Having those will be my paper evidence for conferences, RTI, and parent meetings.  The goal sheets that I am referring to are in my Writing Resource pack shown below, which I recommend for anyone wanting to start writing workshop or anyone that already does writing workshop. On Friday's we will re-visit the goals poster and discuss our progress as a class. If you'd like a copy of the pieces I used for my poster, click the "Writing Resources" cover below!

Eye will be making spacers this weekend!! Thanks so much for sharing! I tend to refer to "spaghetti spaces" between letters, and "meatball spaces" between words. Love this little visual cue, though!!

In the past I've used tongue depressors with "spaceman" labels. The kids enjoyed using their spaceman when writing.

The writing goals have almost brought around the better circumstantial ideas for the students and they would further be having good time in this regard.
