I'm Finished, Now What?

So I seriously get tired of my kids finishing centers/work early and asking me, "What can I do now?" How about sit quietly with a book and don't talk...LOL!  In all seriousness, it's gotten kinda crazy over the years.  This is the time of the school year when kids are zippin' through their work and centers because they are just THAT SMART!  I've tried all kinds of systems and I've discovered a few things:

1.  Ain't nobody got time to run 5 million copies constantly.
2.  Ain't nobody want to look at all those copies/papers.
3.  Kids get bored with the same few things.

I met Deedee Wills at the French Lick Blogger Meet up a few weeks ago {she is so funny!!!} and decided to peruse her blog once I got home.  She has some great ideas!  One that I noticed that I reallllly liked was her "Dessert Tubs" idea, which I believe she said she got from Cara Carroll.  As soon as I saw the post, I knew I had to run to Target, get bins, make labels, and gather things to make my kids their own dessert bins.

Here is how to set them up:

You get some bins.  I chose 5 because I have 5 table groups of kids.  Print off or make some labels that have matching numbers {or colors or whatever you do for your table groups}.  Attach the labels to the tubs.  I used Velcro.  Pull some fun and engaging activities to put in your tubs.  I try to only put a few inside each tub.  Think outside the box here...try to stay paper free and make the activities quick and simple.  Activities that can be cleaned up quickly.  I went with some of these for mine:  play-doh, sentence scrambles, number grid puzzles, floor puzzles, flash cards, and Tenzi {possibly my favorite game ever}.  You can throw in previous center activities or games you've played in class {I mean, how many times have you spent a million hours making/copying/laminating a game that your kids use for all of 15 minutes?  Story of my life.  Why not get a little more use out of it before filing it away for next year?!}.  I have become obsessed with thinking of things to put in my dessert bins.....if you have an idea, leave it in the comments below so we can all get some great ideas!

**PS-Reading: always an option.  I keep a few buckets of seasonal library books out for kids to look through.  I also keep a tub of AR books out for them.

Here is how to use the tubs:

Each time you add new activities to the bins, go over the directions/rules.  Whenever kids finish a center or seat work, they may visit their dessert bin.  They choose to work independently or with friends at their table who are also finished.  They may not get into another table's bin!!!!  Each day after school, rotate the goodies inside the bins down.  So far, my kids have been LOVING their bins!

That's it!  Simple and awesome.  Thank you Cara and Deedee for the great idea!

Tenzi: A Bright Idea

Hi, friends!  It's time for another Bright Ideas Blog Hop!  I always look forward to these events, and I hope you do, too!  There are so many great ideas!

Today's post is all about a fun game that I discovered last year.  It's a dice game called Tenzi.  It is seriously the most fun thing ever.  I stumbled across it at a toy store around Christmas time and it was half off.  It had one of those "Best Toy Award" stickers on it so I figured I'd give it a shot.  Holy Moly!  I did not realize what a hit it would be!  I introduced it during inside recess one day and the rest was history!  It became a staple in my weekly Math tubs,  during inside recess, and for early-finishers.  I ended up getting lots more sets because it is just that good of a game.  So how do you play?  Each player gets a set of 10 colored dice.  You say "Ready, Set, Go" or whatever you want to initiate the game.  Everyone rolls all 10 dice and looks for a number that they have the most of.  They then keep the ones they want to keep and re-roll to get more of the number they are going for.  The first person to get all 10 the same yells "TENZI!"  It's seriously so fun.  I play all the time with my kids!  To check out the game, click BELOW!

Fall Centers

Ahhh, Fall!  Pumpkin spice lattes, jeans, boots, and everything else wonderful!  I am such a summer girl...I die for the pool and sun...BUT I do love when the weather cools down a bit and Fall arrives.  I guess it's safe to say I love all of the seasons.  Those of you that live down South, you should really visit the Mid-West in the Fall!  It's gorgeous.

So speaking of Fall, I spent some time a few weeks ago updating my Fall Math and Literacy centers. I had made them two years ago and they were long due for a makeover!  Rhyming, syllables, cvc words, number order, and MORE!  The centers are general "Fall" so you can use them anytime September-November.  Below are a few of my favorite centers from this set.
Match a rhyme
Syllable sort
CvC & counting

Number order/what comes next
Beginning graphing
Before/after
My sweet friend, Amy, who I met through blogging, sent me some photos of my Fal centers in action! She is always SO supportive of the things I share on my blog/fb/tpt store!  I really appreciate it!   I love seeing pictures of my things in the classroom!  If you'd like to send me a photo, you can do so by emailing it to meganwheeler44@yahoo.com or tagging me on Instagram {mrswheeler44}.  Thanks, Amy!!!

Number Sense

Ahhhh, the beginning of the year.  Time to review all skills.  ASAP.   So much to do, so little time to do it in!  I find that if I don't spend the first month or so of school reviewing all things numbers with my kids, Math will be a big, fat, epic fail.  I like to ensure that my kids...

1. know their numbers
2. know number order
3. can compare two numbers

Here are some things I've been doing to help my kiddos be successful with these skills:

Teen Numbers Poems-We all know how tricky those teen numbers can be!  I made these posters a few years ago.  The kids and I both love singing these!

Videos-We love Harry Kindergarten Music number videos on Youtube.  The teen numbers one is great and also the big numbers song is, too!

Number Line-We've been counting up and back on my new velcro number line from Lakeshore Learning.  I love the little frogs that came with it--perfect for "hopping" up and back!

Slate Review-Practicing number writing on our dry erase slates...always fun and interesting to see number formation!  I love how one child was helping another child who was struggling!!!

Quick Checks-We took a few quick check assessment quizzes {from my volume 1 set} to monitor progress.

New Games-One addition to help with number sense that I've been really excited about is my "Math Games on the Fly" pack!  This has tons of great review games for beginning first graders as well as games for later in the year!  These are handy for in class review, supplementing your curriculum, sending home for extra practice, or using for early finishers/center work.  We've been playing some of these games and they are a HIT!

Take Home Games-I've just started sending home games from my "Math Take Home Game Bags" pack!  The kids and their families enjoyed their first game!  This set is a great way to make school-to-home connections.

Books-I tie in literature whenever I can!  We've read lots of good number books.  Below are some of my favorites:

  • Mouse Count
  • Who Stole the Cookies
  • City Numbers
  • 10 Black Dots
  • Anno's Counting Book
  • Fish Eyes
  • Boom Chicka Rock
Although we haven't yet started Math Tubs, we will soon!  Baby steps!

I'll be back later in the week to share what we're up to now in Math!  Happy weekend, friends!
