AnthroDesk

Hey everyone!  Hope you are all having a fantastic summer.  It's hard to believe we are in July already.  Time is definitely flying!

Today's post is all about a product that I recently had the opportunity to test out.  I am working with AnthroDesk US.  I was able to try out their AnthroDesk Sit to Stand Electric Standing Desk.  The AnthroDesk is just as it sounds...a versatile, electric desk that allows you to sit OR stand!  In today's world, it's easy to get sedentary...It seems as though we are all trying to become more active and get more movement in.

Personally, a healthy lifestyle and movement are not only important to me; they are vital.  I suffer from Degenerative Disc Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  I HAVE to keep moving to keep my body in good working condition.  Sitting for hours in front of a computer or tv is uncomfortable and painful. I love the versatility of the AnthroDesk.  I'm able to change positions frequently, with ease.

The AnthroDesk is adjustable, with the shortest height being 72 inches and the tallest height being 120 inches.  It can truly accommodate anyone!  The desk features up/down arrows, as well as 4 pre-set settings.

The AnthroDesk gives me the option to lower the desk to use with my chair.  When I'm tired or uncomfortable from sitting, I can raise the desk up and stand.  I find that standing helps my posture, as well!  It's easy to slouch in a chair.  *Fun fact-I'm currently standing as I type this!  Placing a walking pad under the desk would be an excellent addition, and a way to get more movement in while working/browsing the internet.  Hello, healthy lifestyle!

The worktop of the desk is large (120x60),  providing plenty of room for a laptop/computer, and much more.

My husband easily assembled the desk in approximately 20 minutes.  The desk was well-packaged.  All parts were included and the directions were simple to follow.  The desk came with two Allen wrenches.  In addition to those, my husband did need a Phillips screwdriver.

The AnthroDesk would be perfect for an office or classroom.  I plan on taking mine to my classroom in the fall!

If you're looking for a new desk for your office space and/or classroom, I highly recommend the AnthroDesk Sit to Stand Electric Standing Desk!

Products I've Tried

Hey everyone!  It's been a while since I've blogged.  The start of the school year consumes all of my energy.  Heading into conference weeks, and hopefully things will settle down after that.  I wanted to share a few favorite products that I've recently tried.

First up: shoes!  I got a chance to try the KURU "Glide" sandals and I am LOVING them for work and weekends.  They are so comfy and provide good support.  They have pigskin lining which helps reduce air and moisture, thus reducing irritation and rubbing.  I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis and Plantar Fasciitis and am very particular about my footwear.  The "Glide" are a great transition shoe for summer into fall.  I don't know about you, but I wear sandals until it snows here in Ohio!  I chose the walnut brown/blood orange combo.

Kuru comes in whole sizes.  They recommend sizing up if you are in between sizes. Bonus: Kuru provides free shipping and free returns!  Click here to shop!

Next up: a new lady product!  Over the last six months or so, I've been transitioning to all natural, non-toxic products.  This has included household products and personal products.  Being someone who suffers from severe menstrual cramps, I'm always on the hunt for a solution.  For most of my life, I've used 800 mg Ibuprofen to help manage the pain.  Without it, I would be unable to work and complete daily tasks.  In my quest for a non-toxic lifestyle, I discovered Jovi, a drug-free patch to help with cramps and back pain. Jovi helps intercept the initial message of discomfort before it reaches your brain.

I had the opportunity to try Jovi recently.  The setup was super easy.  Just peel the clear adhesive patch and place onto the Jovi patch.  Then peel the remaining half of the adhesive patch and stick.  I chose to place my patch below my belly button.  I wore the patch to work for two days and was able to go my entire cycle with NO MEDICINE!!  Unbelievable.  I will absolutely continue to use this product as a natural way to combat cramps and low back pain associated with my cycle.  If you'd like to check out Jovi for yourself and read more about how the science behind it works, click here.  Now through Halloween, they are offering $20 off Jovi patch purchases.

Ice Shaker

Hi, friends!  If you've been around for awhile, you probably know that I enjoy sharing products that I really love.  I recently had the chance to check out some cups by Ice Shaker.  I was super excited to try these cups because it's pretty much a known fact that 1. Teachers never get to enjoy hot coffee and 2.  Teachers don't drink enough water.  It seems like we are always on the hunt for "the perfect travel cup for water" or "the perfect travel cup for our daily coffee."  As I was perusing the Ice Shaker website, the first words that caught my attention were "Ice cold.  All day."  I also saw that this product was featured on Shark Tank, CNBC, Forbes, and a few other well-known outlets.  I also noticed that there were a variety of cups to choose from...Shaker Bottles, Flex Bottles, Skinny Tumblers, and Skinny Shakers.  As I mentioned above, I am constantly on a mission to find good travel cups for water and coffee (both iced and hot), so I went with a Skinny Tumbler and a Skinny Shaker.

The Skinny Tumbler comes with a straw but the lid can also be used for sipping if a straw isn't your thing.  Personally, I love straws, especially reusable ones!  The skinny, steel design is perfect for a cup holder and is easy to grasp.  Many of you know that I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and holding giant cups is quite painful and cumbersome.  The Skinny Tumbler also keeps hot beverages hot for over 6 hours and cold beverages cold for over 24 hours!  Insanely awesome.  Sold.  There were many designs and colors to choose from, but when I saw the tie-dye, I knew it was meant for me!  The bright colors are BEAUTIFUL and I love the glossy finish.  I've already received so many compliments on my cup!

What drew me to the Skinny Shaker was the carrying handle and leak-proof pop top lid.  I'm notorious for spilling my water in my car, so having a cup with a leak-proof lid will be amazing for my morning and afternoon commute!  Like with the Skinny Tumbler, the Skinny Shaker is also slim (perfect for a cup holder) and keeps hot drinks hot for over 6 hours and cold drinks cold for over 24 hours.  I decided on a white cup for my Skinny Shaker because the clean look is so sleek.

comes with a removable rubber base for soft landing

I can't wait to carry both of these cups to school in the fall and I am excited to share a link to shop with you!  Be sure to sign up for emails from "Ice Shaker" to get $5.00 off your purchase.  Happy drinking!

Back to School With Vionic Shoes

I "kicked off" a new school year with a brand new pair of Vionic shoes!  Vionic shoes were created by a podiatrist named Phillip Vasyli.  Lucky for me (and anyone else who suffers from foot pain), Phillip created the "Orthaheel" orthotic, the world's first and only true orthotic available without a prescription.

I have been wearing Vionic shoes for 5 years.  They are truly the only brand of shoes that I can wear.  I suffer from plantar fasciitis and heel spurs.  I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.  I have LOTS of foot problems.  Not a good thing for a first grade teacher and avid gym-goer.

I remember having foot pain even as a child.  However, it became more severe into adulthood, specifically when I began teaching and exercising more.  I started to see a podiatrist many years ago. I began receiving injections in my feet due to my plantar fasciitis pain.  Needless to say, the injections were extremely painful.  It was also a hassle to continually have to go to a podiatrist.  My podiatrist recommended custom orthotic insoles for me.  However, they cost around $300 for one set and my insurance wouldn't cover them.  I began researching shoes that helped with foot pain, specifically plantar fasciitis.  Low and behold, I found Vionic!  I immediately ordered a pair of sandals and was SHOCKED.  I began wearing the sandals through my house and never went barefoot again.  I even ordered a pair of slippers.  I have had so many pair of Vionic through the years and have never been disappointed.  The quality is top-notch.   I am so thankful to to have comfortable shoes to wear to teach in.  Below are just a few things I love about Vionic:
  • They provide relief for my feet--no explanation necessary!
  • They have a variety of colors/styles to choose from--I don't know about you, but when I think about "orthotic" shoes, I think clunky shoes that look like something a 90 year old would wear!  Vionic has broken that stigma!  I can't tell you how many compliments I receive about all of my shoes (remember I said I only wear Vionic?).  People are shocked when I tell them they are orthotic shoes.
  • Shipping is a flat $5.00--can't beat that!
  • The 30 day wear test--Try your shoes for 30 days.  If they don't work for you, send them back.  Vionic will refund your money.
The "Reagan Mule" is a great pair of shoes for Fall and back to school season!  Aren't they beautiful?!

When you are back to school shopping this year, I highly recommend that you check out Vionic and invest in a quality pair of shoes.  You can shop here online or find a retailer near you that sells Vionic.  Happy Shopping!!

**I was sent the "Reagan Mule" shoes by Vionic to try in exchange for this blog post.  However, I picked the shoes out, and have worn Vionic shoes for many years, as mentioned above.  All statements in this post are my own.

Living with an Autoimmune Disease

Hi, friends.  Today's post has nothing to do with teaching, but is a part of me now.  I wrote this post to spread an awareness about Rheumatoid Disease (Rheumatoid Arthritis).  If you also suffer from RA or any other autoimmune disease, please know that you are not alone.

In June of 2018, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Disease. Rheumatoid Disease can also be referred to as Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Rheumatoid Disease is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints and sometimes the organs. It happens because your immune system decides to attack the synovium, which is the lining of the joints. It affects any joint in your body: elbows, feet, hips, jaw, knees, neck, ankles, shoulders, and wrists.  As the disease progresses, cartilage and bone are damaged and destroyed.  Eventually the supporting tendons, ligaments, and muscles weaken.  This leads to a limited range of motion and difficulty moving.  In the long term, joints can become deformed.

There is a lack of understanding about the disease and that is why I am choosing to share my diagnosis and daily experiences with it on here.  When someone hears “Rheumatoid Arthritis,” they think of their grandma’s arthritis which is generally caused by old age and old joints.  However, RA is not just "arthritis."  Arthritis is one symptom of RA.  Approximately 1.5 million Americans of all ages suffer from RA.  It is much more common in women than men.

RA is a very difficult to diagnose and often takes years.  The signs and symptoms mimic other diseases.  The diagnosis involves working with a rheumatologist who takes blood work, X-rays, ultrasounds, and gives a head-to-toe physical exam.  Once diagnosed, the rheumatologist will prescribe a plan for you.  This typically involves the prescription of heavy medicine, similar to those used in chemotherapy.  In June, I was prescribed medicine but declined it.   I would rather fight through the pain and fatigue and risk joint deformity vs. putting such a strong and foreign substance in my body.

Living with RA is like a roller coaster ride.  Some days I feel pretty good, meaning just one or two joints hurt.  Other days, I experience any or a combination of the following: stiffness, body ache, shortness of breath, pain in specific joints, migraine headaches, swollen and red joints, or extreme fatigue, just to name a few.  Some days I can’t open a bottle of water.  Some days I can.  Some days I can go up and down the stairs in our house just fine and others I literally crawl up them to go to bed because my knees physically won’t work.  Some days I wake up and feel as though I've been beat up in my sleep.  Never do I wake up feeling "refreshed" after sleeping 10-11 hours.  I am always tired, always fatigued.  Some days I can't form a sentence correctly due to brain fog, which is inflammation around my brain.  Other days I am well-spoken.  Sometimes my feet hurt so badly I have to wear flip-flops in single digit temperatures in Ohio.  Most days, I can not bend over to put my shoes and socks on and have to sit down.  Getting dressed now takes me much longer than it used to, due to the stiffness I experience in the mornings.  I can't squat down next to a desk of a first grader.  My knees are in excruciating pain if I do. I also can not sit on the floor with my first graders.  I am physically unable to sit "criss-cross..." my hips simply will not do it.  RA is constant ebbing and flowing.  I never know what I am going to get.  The constant uncertainty takes a toll on my mind.  I never stop thinking about my body.  I’m always “checking in” and am hyper-aware of my joints.

Anyone that knows me knows that I love to keep busy.  I also like to do everything myself and not ask for help.  This disease has forced me to cut back on blogging and creating things for my Teachers Pay Teachers store, saying no to social events on school nights, and cutting back on extra committees and events at school.  It has forced me to slow down and made me ask for more help at home. It has forced me to prioritize self-care.  My diagnosis was a wake-up call of sorts; I had dedicated my entire, 15 year teaching career to teaching, working almost every evening until dark on things for my students and my classroom.  That has absolutely slowed down and not by choice.

I have always enjoyed exercising, but now it’s more of a prescription than anything else.  I HAVE to exercise to keep my joints lubricated.  Sitting for long periods of time makes things worse.  It’s a catch-22 because when I am tired and fatigued after teaching first grade all day, I want and need to rest, but I also have to keep my joints moving.  I work with a personal trainer to make sure I am doing my weight-lifting exercises correctly, as to not cause further damage.  I attend cycling classes because cycling is great for my joints.  Monthly medical massages are now part of my life.  I go even when I don't want to take the time or spend the money on them.

Because I have a compromised immune system, I am prone to getting sick more frequently.  It also takes me much longer than an average person to get over an illness.  This is because my body is confused and is attacking itself vs. attacking the infection or virus (flu, cold, etc..) that I have.  I am constantly washing my hands, sanitizing my hands, or wiping something down with a Clorox wipe.

I take more vitamins and supplements than you can imagine, in an effort to help with the pain and fatigue.  Each morning, I take 5 various vitamins and each evening I take 5 more, different vitamins.  I have also had to switch my diet up...limiting my sugar, eliminating red meat, and incorporating anti-inflammatory foods into my meals.  I've had wrist surgery.  I've had shoulder surgery.  I've had injections into my feet and hip due to pain.

Thankfully, Mr. Wheeler has been beyond amazing at home.  He has always been very helpful, but now he assists with even more things for us and I am so grateful for that.  The future is scary but I am taking things one day at a time and trying not to let my mind think about the what-ifs.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.  I hope that I have given you some knowledge into Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Below are some fast facts about the disease.

What I've Been Up To!

Hi and happy Friday!!!  I am just returning from a 9-day trip to Sandals Negril, Jamaica and wanted to share some photos from the trip!  It was an amazing adventure!  My husband and I went to our first Sandals resort last summer for our 10th anniversary and fell in love.  We went to St. Lucia {Grande Resort}.  While on property, we booked a trip for Jamaica for this year!  And we may or may not have booked another trip for next year!  Look out, Nassau, Bahamas!  We are hooked!  Sandals is all-inclusive...no need to worry about money while you are there.  All drinks, food, water sports, and entertainment are included.  The only things you pay for are off-property excursions and souvenir shopping.  Oh, and the spa, which is to die for.

Our view each day!
We found tons of sea life right off the shore.   PS-that's not my hand!  LOL!

Entertainment!!!

Cliff diving {there was no way I was going to do this after my shoulder surgery!}

#teacherstyle

Good morning, friends!  Hope your weekend is off to a great start.  As you've probably gathered over the years, I LOVE shopping.  I love clothes, jewelry, shoes, scarves, you name it!  And I was recently saddened by the closing of my FAVORITE STORE OF ALL TIME: The Limited.  Not sure if you heard, but it's gone.  Like the whole company.  Devastation.  I've shopped there since I was in high school...think 1996.  20 years.  I shop other places, but The Limited was where the bulk of my money went when it came to clothes.  I shopped there because I like quality and I don't mind paying more if something is going to be good quality.

I've been on the hunt for some new places to shop and came across a wonderful little online boutique, Trendy Tags.  Sidebar: I'm a skeptic for ordering things online from boutiques because I can't actually feel the fabric to know what the quality is like.  However, I gave Trendy Tags a go and was in love! Everything that I have ordered so far {I have ordered about 5 pieces} has been great quality.  Not to mention super stylish!

To shop Trendy Tags, just join the Facebook page HERE.  Then check in every Tuesday night at 9:00 pm EST to see what pieces they have for sale that week.  There is usually a limited amount, so you have to be quick!  Shipping is fairly quick, too, which I love!  It's also nice that Amy, the store owner, is quick to respond if you have a question about any of the pieces and the sizing.

Here I am in two of the pieces I've purchased over the past 6 months.  Isn't this dress cute?  I love the neckline and the chunky buttons.

This sweater is SO warm.  It's super chunky and perfect for winter.  Plus, that color is so in right now!

Awkward selfie photo below:

I'll be posting more photos of me in my pieces once I actually get ready for the day and am back to work!  In the meantime, be sure to check out Trendy Tags on Facebook!  See you Tuesday night at 9pm EST!

Spring Teacher Blogger Meet Up 2016

Last weekend, I attended the French Lick Spring Teacher Blogger Meet-Up in Indiana.  This was my second time attending and it did not disappoint {to see last year's festivities click HERE}!  This year, I brought Mr. Wheeler along as my travel companion!  French Lick is about a 4 hour drive from our house and last year it was pretty lonely driving alone!  We left on Friday afternoon and arrived around dinnertime.  After checking in, we headed to dinner, where I met up with many old {and some new} friends!

After dinner, Mr. Wheeler and I walked around and checked out the sights.  French Lick is a beautiful resort!  Although I forgot to take pictures of French Lick, I did manage to take some of its sister resort, West Baden.

On Saturday, I got up and got ready for the Blogger Meet Up.  We began the day with some introductions and ice-breakers.  Everyone contributed to making a letter to spell out the theme for the theme of our event, "Take Your Passion and Make It Happen."

It was great to see old friends and meet some new ones!  I was *super* pumped to meet Amy and Nicole from Teachers Pay Teachers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next it was time for lunch.  We had a catered lunch from the deli.  Lunch was full of laughs and good conversation.

After lunch, we had round table sessions, where people could break out and go to 15-minute sharing sessions.  The topics covered a variety of things including centers, alternative seating, TpT updates, and more!  I led a round table on using games in the classroom that can be applied to most any content.  *I'll be posting about them on my blog soon!

We also had a teacher tool-swap gift exchange!  Each person brought their favorite tool and we passed our gifts around a circle with music playing.  When the music stopped, we got to keep the gift in our hand.  I won a TPT bag, water bottle, and note pad.  I brought Mr. Sketch markers, crayons, and smelly stickers.

As the day winded down, we had raffles.  Our sponsors were so generous again this year!  I won an alphabet DVD from ABC Mouse, which I am super excited about as a beginning of the year review next fall.  I also won the cute backpack to go with it!  I donated two pair of Stella and Dot earrings!

After the raffles, we concluded the day with some great swag bag goodies!  Our sponsors were so generous!  My favorite things were:  a  key chain from Better Life Bags, a Vera Bradley grocery bag, Astrobrights paper, and stickers from Creative Teaching Press.

After our main event ended, we were on our own for dinner and then we met up again at 9:00 for an 80's party!  So fun!  Everyone really outdid themselves with their outfits!

Overall, it was a fantastic weekend!  So glad I was able to make it again this year.  I would be remise if I ended this post without thanking our WONDERFUL organizer, Holly Ehle.  She is truly amazing and such a kind and generous person!

Hope to see you in French Lick next year, friends!
